Paper planes! They are magical and bring us back to our childhood. This DIY project gives a nod to nostalgia with a fresh new take on paper planes… a way to recycle and re-purpose otherwise wasted materials: maps. Our paper planes are made with re-purposed Atlas pages. To create this look, search your home for old maps or look for vintage maps on ebay or a local antique shop for an especially nostalgic look. The colors, graphic details and reference to travel make maps the perfect medium for paper planes.
When starting your own DIY paper plane craft project, you can select the map pages with your child…choosing maps of special places you’ve traveled to…or places you dream to go.
Once we created a variety of paper aircraft, we strung them together with fishing line. You may choose to display planes against the wall as a piece of art too, like we did for our All Seasons Design Guide…
Or, as streamers in a window…
For our Young America showroom we created a mobile using a plane propeller from Authentic Models as the base and hung our paper plane garlands from it. We especially love the natural movement mobiles create. What do you think?
Happy paper plane-making! Whether you choose to decorate with them or just PLAY!
